In 1989, a small group of Ugandan families living in Atlanta, Georgia, came together as a community to celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving. The success of this informal social gathering led to the creation of an organization that, over the following years, evolved into the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA). UNAA was incorporated in Texas in 1993.
Although initially composed primarily of Ugandans residing in the North American countries of the United States of America and Canada, UNAA now also has an active chapter in Uganda and members in several other countries.
The principal goals of UNAA are to promote the general well-being of all of its members; through scheduled activities such as its annual convention, by encouraging members engage in activities that promote their own welfare (e.g. investment clubs, immigration forums, etc); by acting as a medium for the dissemination and sharing of information and ideas on all relevant subjects through its newsletter and electronic chat room at; and through active educational campaigns.
UNAA hosts an annual convention that has drawn as many as 1,500 delegates from throughout the world. The principal goals of this convention are to provide a venue where Ugandans from throughout the world can meet; for social interaction and entertainment, to discuss, network, and explore business opportunities, to engage in and discover ways of becoming relevant in Uganda, to discuss matters relative to their daily social and domestic well-being, to celebrate the diversity of their cultural heritage, and to enable single (unmarried) individuals to meet other singles in a social environment.
UNAA has also co-hosted several trade and business forums between North America and Africa; with particular emphasis on Uganda and its East African neighbors Kenya and Tanzania. |
