What should participants do in
preparation for the Fair
All participants must be registered for the UNAA Convention – visit the registration page for more information.
- Plan to arrive on Thursday, August 28, 2008 to take advantage of the full day planned events on Friday, August 29, 2008.
- Plan to attend the Search Engine workshop on Friday morning from 8:00 am -10:00am. Career Coaches will be available to assist participants with job search strategies, resume critique, salary negotiation, personal presentation, 30 second self-commercials and much more.
Homework
- Each participant’s first step is to find out which companies will be on-site. (A comprehensive list will be available by August 1, 2008).
- Research the companies that will be attending the Fair. Visit their Web sites, read their press releases, and search the internet for stories. Look for recent acquisitions or mergers that indicate the company’s financial status, stability, new products introduced, or any other business news that gives you an idea of where the company is headed and how you can play a role.
Materials
- Put your tools in gear – remember this will be your opportunity to land that dream job.
- Make sure your resume is current with updated contact information, and that it sends a clear, concise picture of who you are and what you have to offer. Double check for spelling and grammatical errors. Make sure your e-mail address is professional. Your first and last name are recommended. If you do not have one, seek help in opening a free account.
- Take this time to order as many business cards as you can, you will need them. Google those companies where you can order business cards inexpensively. Some of the suggested sites are as follows:
www.VistaPrint.com
www.OvernightPrints.com
www.Stationary-Stationery.com
- Bring your portfolio, samples of your work or college transcripts – if the GPA is worth noting to increase your chance for selection.
- Practice, practice, practice. Get together with a friend or family member and practice answering typical interview questions such as "Tell me about yourself", or "What kind of position are you looking for?" Additionally, develop a list of questions you want to ask each company. One of the best ways to look prepared and professional is showing up with thoughtful, intelligent questions.

Your Personal Presentation
Dress the part. Get plenty of rest the night before – sleep does wonders. Since this will be an opportunity to meet your next employer, impression at this time is more important than anything you can think of. Pack your conservative business suits – colors recommended are: Grey, Navy Blue, Black with accents to give you that corporate look, no matter what kind of job you are seeking. Make sure you look well groomed, and carry your materials in a professional folder or portfolio. Remember to turn off your cell phones during the exploratory phase with the hiring managers or any company representative.
Bring many copies of your resumes, printed out on professional resume paper, as well as a few copies of your references list. Be prepared to hand these out many times throughout the day.
Be confident and proactive. This will not be the place to be shy and demure. The best way to make a lasting impression is by being professional yet aggressive while selling your self.
Approach the companies that interest you first, make eye contact, wear a smile, appear enthused and introduce yourself with a firm handshake. When asked, take the initiative to talk about yourself and why you are interested in their company- keep this simple and precise.
Answer questions succinctly, with solid examples of your strengths and qualifications. Ask your prepared questions and listen intently to the answers. Tie in what you know about their company from your research to the type of job you are seeking. This is the time to convince the hiring manager why you should be hired.
Whatever you do, don’t leave a company booth without getting a business card and company brochure. This might be the only opportunity you have to meet with the hiring manager face to face and you will want his or her contact information later. |

Tips for Closing the Deal
- If you had an opportunity for an interview, feel free to request honest feed back on your performance. Remember, this is your only opportunity with the hiring manager, therefore, convince them that you are the perfect candidate for this job and reiterate what you will bring to the table.
- Feel free to ask how soon a hiring decision will be made.
- Follow up. Just like any job interview, it is important to follow up after a Career Fair.
- Using the business cards you collected, write letters to key company representatives-e-mail is acceptable. Thank them for taking the time to speak with you, reiterate your strengths, and let them know that you will call them to follow up in a couple of days. Then, be true to your word and call. Just make sure you don’t waste the opportunity you had at the career fair. Your due diligence afterwards can be as important as your preparation.
It is our hope that you will find this 1st UNAA Career Fair beneficial with an added zest to your desire of attending future UNAA conventions. See you all in Orlando and remember to register. |

Celebrate with us
In the past 20 years, many positive things have happened allowing all the Ugandans abroad, USA in particular, to become a part of a United Community. Mr. Ssali Luwemba diligently outlined the chronology of events that have evolved within the last 20 years. 20 years in the making, most Ugandans now look forward every year to meet in different cities across the USA to network, share knowledge, learn about the most recent developments and investment opportunities in Uganda etc., in an effort to better themselves both at home and abroad.
The 1st Annual Career Fair
The 1st Annual Career Fair which will take place on Friday, August 29, 2008 from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm during the Convention at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort. The Career Fair is in line with this year’s theme of: Great Achievements:: Endless Opportunities. Our goal is to make sure that for the first time in UNAA history, some conventioneers will return to their respective destinations with a better opportunity, a good opportunity or a promise of a new opportunity.
The objectives for the 1st Annual UNAA Career Fair are as follows:
Provide our participants with an added excitement to attend the UNAA conventions every year.
Facilitate a search engine work shop to make sure our participants are prepared for that decisive step and ready to meet with their prospective employers during the Fair.
Invite reputable companies from across the USA in an attempt to provide our participants an opportunity to meet with hiring managers, face-face.
Invite only those companies with "real jobs” so that our participants can receive interviews on the spot and possibly job offers.
Expose participants to employers who they would not have an opportunity to do so on their own.
A Career Fair usually presents an opportunity to make a good first impression with a potential new employer. This Career Fair will be a great place to get each participant’s foot in the door to so many corporations from small to large. We will provide our participants with important face time with dozens of companies that are actively looking for quality candidates, and do so all in one place.
In order to maximize our participants’ potential and increase their chances of landing that dream job, they will need to do more than showing up. A successful career fair experience takes planning, preparation and the confidence to sell your product – which is YOU. We encourage all our participants to use this Fair as a critical resource to help jump start their job search and thus advance their careers. It is also a great resource for new college graduates to land that first job. |
